The Department of Horticulture, Government of Karnataka has been nurturing over 99 FPOs (formed as per SFAC guidelines) across Karnataka during the past three years. Like-wise, NABARD has supported formation of over 200 FPOs in Karnataka. Besides there are crop-specific farmer organisations and associations in Karnataka.
Most of the FPOs have started business activities (Inputs, animal feed and output business) and have three years of track record. However, many FPOs are struggling to meet their expenses even with large volume of transactions. There are many reasons for that. Mainly, most of them are only using their own capital and have not got access to bank finance yet. Second, most of them have only started input business and are not geared up to do output-based business.
The solution lies in enabling FPOs to establish linkages with input and service providers as well as buyers in the market. Besides, FPOs should be provided with knowledge of compliance and conformance so that they get access to formal credit sources from banks and government sponsored financial institutions such as NABKISAN.
FPO Buyer Seller Meet, initiated by the department of horticulture, Government of Karnataka and organised by Foretell Business Solutions Private Limited and managed by Eventell Global Solutions Pvt Ltd., proposes to achieve the above-mentioned objective.
During 2019 edition of FPO buyer seller meet held on 26-27 June 2019 at J N Tata Auditorium, Bangalore. Over 600+ people from 250+ FPOs, 6 sponsors, 22+ speakers, 30+ exhibition stalls, 20+ financial institutions, 30+ buyers gathered at J N Tata Auditorium, IISc Campus. The programme started with lightening lamp by honourable Minister of Horticulture, Govt. of Karnataka Shri M. C. Managuli, over 600+ FPO members and Department personalities attended the programme and they are responsible for the success of this event. The honourable minister expressed his happiness on technologies developed for farming and he is very enthusiastic to watch implements and inputs which are exhibited by exhibitors in the event. He suggested farmers and FPOs to grow cash crop along with food crop and sell them through FPOs to get good prices for their produce, through this strengthen the financial status of small and marginal farmers. And he also advised to grow crops which are suitable for soil condition. He mentioned that Government Department officials and political leaders should work together for development of farming community. Dr. M. V. Venkatesh, Director of Horticulture, Govt. of Karnataka in his special address said that FPOs play an important role in exporting food products. To support and give association form to farming community, FPOs were started in 2014-15. He also mentioned about amount released by Horticulture Department to FPOs for different sector of works like Custom Hire Centre, working capital, Infrastructure development etc., Mr. C. V. Reddy Chief General Manager, NABARD in his special address he advised farmer and FPOs that to follow grading method to earn more profit. He also opined that FPOs should soon aspire to go into value addition.
Close to 500 - 600 decision makers from FPOs (president and CEOs from over 300 FPOs) are expected to come for the gathering over the two-day period. Together these would represent 2 lakh farmers or about 3 lakh acres of cultivation from across Karnataka. Total value of the produce would be around Rs. 1500 cr and the value of inputs would be around Rs. 400 to Rs. 500 cr. Thus, the BSM presents a very big and focussed opportunity for input suppliers, banks, service providers and buyers of the output.
